Call for 2007-2008 VCOG FOI Award Nominations

Nominations are now being accepted for VCOG’s 2006 Freedom of Information Awards. Entries should be submitted by April 22nd  to VCOG, Box 1293, Warrenton, VA 20188 or This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

Awards are given for outstanding efforts by citizens, media and government to keep government meetings or records open to the public.

An individual citizen or citizens’ group will be the recipient of the Coalition’s coveted Laurence E. Richardson award. A long-time Charlottesville broadcasting executive, Richardson helped spearhead the Coalition’s founding and was a life-long foe of government secrecy. He died in 1999.

Generally, the awards will be given for achievement in the last 18 months.

Most recent award winners include: The City of Virginia Beach’s Freedom of Information Office Virginia Beach, the state’s first local-government FOI office in August 2003. The office has handled nearly 3,000 FOI requests, produced more than 46,000 requested documents and aided inspection of thousands more, and provided space for easy record review just a few steps from City Council’s meeting chambers; The Culpeper Citizen, Culpeper Star-Exponent, the Fredericksburg Free Lance-Star and the Virginia Press Association for their successful court fight to force FOIA compliance in Culpeper County; and Diane Johnson, a Glade Spring resident who sought town records involving sale or purchase, without public hearings, of a half-million-dollars worth of town property.

Winners will be presented with laser-engraved jade acrylic awards at the Coalition’s statewide conference at the Wingate Inn in Fredericksburg May 22nd at approximately 7:30 pm.

Entries should include contact information for you and your nominee and documentation of their open-government contributions.
